None of this is compulsory. But the jobs that run smoothest are the ones where the rooms are clear, we can get water and power easily, and we have been told about the problem spots before we arrive.
This is the list we would give a friend before a visit.
The short version
- Clear small items and breakables from the floor
- Vacuum if you can — it helps, though we can do it
- Tell us about problem spots and previous DIY attempts
- Sort parking and access, especially in terraced streets
- Plan where pets will be during and after the clean
Before we arrive
The useful preparation is mostly about clearing the way.
- Lift toys, shoes, magazines, plant pots and cables off the carpet
- Move fragile ornaments and electronics off low furniture
- Empty the room entirely if it is a tenancy or move-out clean
- Point out where the nearest outdoor tap and power socket are
Tell us about previous treatments
This one genuinely changes the result. Supermarket spot removers and hired machines often leave detergent residue behind, and that residue has to be flushed out before the carpet can be properly cleaned. If you have used something, tell us what — we are not judging, we just need to know what we are working against.
Pets and children
The equipment is loud and the hoses run through doorways, so most people find it easiest to keep pets in another room. Cleaning solutions are safe for households with pets and children once dry.
