On a carpet, a poor method mostly means a poor result. On a sofa, it can mean a permanently watermarked cushion or a shrunken loose cover.
The fabric cleaning code on the label is the starting point, and it is worth finding before anyone touches the piece.
The short version
- W = water-based cleaning is acceptable
- S = solvent only, no water
- WS = either, with care
- X = vacuum only, professional advice needed
- Shampoo residue is the main cause of rapid re-soiling on sofas
What shampooing leaves behind
Foam shampoo systems clean reasonably well but rely on the residue being vacuumed out later. On upholstery it rarely all comes out, and what stays is sticky. That is why a shampooed sofa often looks worse three weeks later than it did before cleaning.
Controlled extraction on fabric
Low-moisture extraction with a hand tool gives control: pre-treat, agitate gently, extract with a rinse, then dry with airflow. On water-safe fabrics that removes soil and the cleaning agent together.
Fabrics that need real caution
Some materials are simply intolerant of wet cleaning, and the damage is not reversible.
- Viscose and rayon blends, which brown and stiffen when wet
- Silk and silk-mix, which watermark easily
- Loose covers that shrink if cleaned off the frame
- Old dyed cottons prone to colour bleed
