Cleaning Wool Carpet Without Damaging It

Wool is durable and forgiving underfoot, and completely unforgiving of the wrong chemistry.

Wool is a protein fibre. That single fact explains most of its cleaning rules: high pH products, bleaches and enzyme cleaners attack the fibre itself, not just what is on it.

Cleaned correctly, wool recovers extremely well — the natural crimp in the fibre helps it bounce back from crushing better than most synthetics.

The short version

  • Neutral to mildly acidic chemistry only
  • No oxygen bleach, no chlorine, no enzyme-based products
  • Wool absorbs a lot of water, so moisture control is critical
  • Prone to browning if left damp too long
  • Recovers from crushing better than most synthetic piles

Why DIY products damage wool

Most supermarket carpet products are formulated for synthetics and run alkaline. On wool that causes yellowing, dye bleed and permanent fibre damage. Oxy-based spot removers are the most frequent culprit we see, and the resulting pale patch is not recoverable by cleaning.

Browning and how to avoid it

Cellulosic browning happens when a wool carpet stays wet too long and natural sugars migrate to the surface as it dries. Correct extraction, airflow and a mildly acidic rinse prevent it. It is a drying problem more than a cleaning one.

Everyday care for wool

Simple habits keep a wool carpet in good shape between professional cleans.

  • Vacuum regularly with a beater bar set high, or suction only on loop pile
  • Blot spills immediately — never rub a wool pile
  • Keep acidic and bleaching products away from it entirely
  • Rotate rugs and use matting at doors to spread wear
